Cloud Resource Intelligence Glossary

Key terms and concepts behind Cloud Resource Intelligence, AWS resource ownership, and the foundations of cloud cost and security management.

Cloud Resource Intelligence (related: cloud cost management, AWS governance, cloud resource optimization)

The practice of continuously analyzing, attributing, and acting on metadata about cloud infrastructure. Cloud Resource Intelligence goes beyond cost monitoring or security scanning to establish a persistent ownership layer across every resource in an environment — enabling cost savings and security improvements as downstream outcomes. Teams searching for better AWS cost management, cloud governance, or cloud resource optimization are often describing the same underlying need.

Resource Ownership Attribution

The process of determining which team, individual, or cost center is responsible for a given cloud resource. Ownership can be inferred from signals in the environment or explicitly assigned via tags. Without it, cost allocation and security accountability are both unreliable.

Inferred Owner

An ownership attribution derived automatically from signals in an AWS environment rather than manually assigned. Disipate surfaces inferred owners as tag recommendations for human review before being applied — they are never written to resources without approval.

Unowned Resource (also: orphaned resource, zombie resource, abandoned resource)

A cloud resource with no identifiable team, individual, or cost center responsible for it. Also commonly called orphaned resources, zombie resources, or abandoned cloud resources. Unowned resources accumulate cost without accountability and represent security surface area that no team is actively reviewing or maintaining. They are the root cause of both cloud waste and governance gaps.

Tag Hygiene (related: AWS tagging compliance, AWS tag coverage, tag governance)

The practice of maintaining consistent, complete, and accurate resource tags across a cloud environment. Poor tag hygiene makes cost allocation, governance, and security attribution unreliable. It is one of the primary operational problems Cloud Resource Intelligence is built to solve continuously — not as a one-time cleanup.

Resource Footprint

The total count and scope of active cloud resources in an environment. A larger footprint creates more surface area for both cost accumulation and security risk. Reducing footprint through ownership clarity — by eliminating unowned and unused resources — is a core outcome of Cloud Resource Intelligence.

Cost and Usage Report (CUR)

AWS's detailed billing dataset, which records usage and cost data for every resource across accounts. The CUR is the primary data source for Disipate — enabling ownership inference and cost analysis without requiring broad IAM permissions or agents running in your environment.

FinOps

A cloud financial management discipline that brings financial accountability to variable cloud spending. Cloud Resource Intelligence is a foundational layer for effective FinOps practice — ownership attribution is the prerequisite for accurate cost allocation, meaningful optimization, and a FinOps hire that can hit the ground running.

Security Posture

An organization's overall security readiness, including the visibility, control, and defensibility of its infrastructure. Ownership clarity directly improves security posture by shrinking the unreviewed attack surface, ensuring every resource has an accountable owner, and enabling security tools like AWS Security Hub and Wiz to surface attributed findings.

Disipate-Namespaced Tags

Tags applied by Disipate that use a dedicated prefix — for example, disipate:inferred-owner — to distinguish them from existing tags. Only Disipate-namespaced tags are ever written to or removed from resources. Existing tags are never modified, and all tags require human approval before being applied.
